Our beginning

E.B. Heyne established a growing nursery at Hackney near Adelaide and he opened a plant shop in Rundle Street Adelaide, it was named E.B. Heyne Seedsman and Florist Wholesale and Retail.

He was a prolific writer and contributed to many newspapers and journals with articles about thecultivation of plants and crops. E.B. wrote two very important and helpful books for gardeners. The Amateur Gardener for South Australia and The Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Garden.

Our founder

E.B. Heyne was a plantexplorer and collector.

In 1862, while exploring in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, E.B measured a huge (felled) eucalyptus tree. It was documented at 12.5 metres (41 feet) wide and 112 metres (365 feet) high, to it’s broken tip, which was a massive 1 metre (3 feet) wide. The tree would have well exceeded its documented height.

When he first came to Adelaide E.B. made a very extensive collection of local seaweeds. He also discovered the Native Tree Fern - Dicksonia antartica on the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges - it is now extinct in South Australia. There was a specimen in the Melbourne Botanic garden with the label Mount Lofty Sth Aus 1870 -E.B. Heyne.

Who we are

The Heyne dynasty has spanned five generations in South Australia.
A family business that has for over 150 years continuously grown and sold premium plants.  Today, Heynes Wholesale produces over 3000 different plant lines on 23 acres of the wind-swept, harsh northern plains of Burton. 

Offering an expansive range of plant stock that is stunning, and superb in both quality and size. Plants that have been grown by South Australians in South Australian conditions for our challenging and diverse South Australian Gardens.
